The hike in petrol and diesel prices by Rs 4 and Rs 2, respectively, effective midnight Wednesday is likely to result in an increase of 7% to 8% in freight charges and 10% in the prices of vegetables and grocery.

Several lorry operators said the hike was unwarranted and insisted that the Centre withdraw it forthwith. All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) spokesperson R Sugumar said AIMTC would convene an emergency meeting this week to discuss whether it should go on a strike against the hike.

"The Central government had not made any significant reduction in fuel prices when the international oil price came down to $45 from $145 a barrel. Even though we had demanded reduction of diesel price by Rs 12 per litre last year, the government had brought down the price by only Rs 4. When the international oil price is $72 a barrel now, the government has chosen to hike the diesel price by Rs 2. We will protest,`` Sugumar said.

K M Narasimhan, former president of the Goods Transport Owners Association said that the fuel hike would have an overall impact in prices of commodities and definitely see a significant increase in charges relating to transportation of goods and commodities. Autorickshaw drivers in Chennai have revived their demand for an increase in fares after the fuel price hike. "Last year, we demanded that the minimum metre fare should be Rs 20, and Rs 10 for every additional km, instead of Rs 14 and Rs 6, respectively. Since the government had reduced the fuel price then, we did not insist. But now we have to raise the demand again,`` said J Seshasayanam, general secretary, Tamil Nadu AITUC Autorickshaw Drivers Federation.

Metropolitan Transportation Corporation (MTC) officials said that the diesel price hike would lead to an increase in expenditure on diesel by Rs five lakh a day. MTC operates more than 3,000 buses and needs about 2.50 lakh litres of diesel daily.

Traders in Koyambedu market said that retail prices of vegetables could see a 10% rise, with increase in transportation charges. Kailasanathan, a merchant in Perambur, said that prices of rice had already increased from Rs 1,500 to Rs 3,000 per bag, compared to last year. The fuel price hike, he added, would further increase the price of rice at least by 5%
